Mercy Cherotich
Mercy’s mother died in childbirth. Nothing is known about her father. Her grandmother raised her on her shamba but she struggled to provide for Mercy in addition to her own children. Later she was taken to live with her aunt who overworked her and isolated her from her cousins. Because of this, she came back to live with her grandmother, stating she would rather be with her grandmother and have less than live with her aunt. She helped her grandparents by fetching water from the river in the forest, using a donkey to carry it, and by assisting with gardening.
She completed primary school and her teacher recommended her to New Dawn Secondary School. Her life has changed so much since she has come to New Dawn. She and her friends share their stories and she has found support and encouragement from them. Madam Susan has also been very helpful to Mercy when she has a problem or gets discouraged. She is in her third year at New Dawn and would like to work as a physician to provide help to other people.
